The Three F’s of Custom Furniture Design

Categories: Design Inspiration, Furniture, Green Design

As I pack and plan out my trip to High Point Market later this week, it made me start thinking about furniture…again. Of course it’s hard NOT to think about furniture when you go to High Point, but lucky for me, it’s something I really love so thinking on furniture isn’t really a burden! I love going to the show and seeing all the new things and trends that are out there almost as much as I enjoy reconnecting with the various vendors and people I work with over the course of the year.В  One of those vendors I’ll be spending some time with is C.R. Laine.В  They have a fabulous selection that represent three important F’s of custom design: Furniture, Fabrics and Finishes.

Cordell Wing Chair - C.R. Laine

Style that Soars!
These Cordell wing chairs are among my favorite pieces. Nothing else like ‘em!

One of the many things that impresses me about C.R. Laine is their “World Friendly” approach to their business.В  Minimizing their impact on the environment is very important and they have several ways of reducing waste and delivering an incredible product without compromising on quality. From only utilizing woods that are harvested carefully and according to stringent guidelines, to using recycled metal and fibers for coils and cushions, it’s truly amazing to me that being green for them isn’t just about being trendy. It’s refreshing to see a manufacturer make considerable effort toward preserving the environment instead of their pocketbook!В  You can read more about C.R. Laine’s “World-Friendly” policies and practices on their website.

Gaston Sofa - C.R. Laine

Lean Lines and Leather!
Curvy and sleek- so unexpected especially with a leather sofa. Most leather sofas that I see aren’t exactly sleek, not so in this case!

Spring fabrics - C.R. Laine

Whimsical and Wonderful
One of my favorite things about working with custom furniture is that you can make it look exactly how you want it. With custom fabrics and finishes it’s easy to have some style impact!

It’s all in the DETAILS
Options with finishes and a variety of trim pieces can be the final detailing you need to make your custom furniture piece into a smashing and stylish success.

This is just a sneak peek at one of the vendors I’ll be hanging out with at the end of this week in beautiful North Carolina.В  Be sure to follow Design Connection on Facebook and Twitter at the end of the week and throughout the weekend for updates and photos of things I’ve discovered on my trip. I can’t wait to share with you all the latest trends in interior design and all the wonderful finds I expect to encounter during my weekend at High Point Market!В  If there is anything specific that you want me to watch for, please be sure to comment or holler at me on Facebook or Twitter and I’ll see what I can do!

Furniture with an Edge: Sleek, Chic and Unique (like you!)
Kansas City is a sprawling city with a potpourri of various cultures, styles and the people to go along with it. If you look around the midwest, we are one of the larger cities. While some folks think we have cows running in the streets and just managed to gain access to the wonderful invention of electricity, KC is actually very much on par with the times! That being said, with the hodgepodge of big companies intermixed with the small, you’d think it would be easy to find high-style furniture and accessories for your home that are unique. Afterall we are centrally located, surely all the design trends have to pass through Kansas City at some point when they are on their way to the opposite coast, right?В  Not so.

Now don’t go thinking that Kansas Citians dwell in the Dark Ages of Interior Design.
Our central location makes it very easy to ship items and it also makes it easy for me to go to shows and further my quest every year to see what’s new on the market to share with my clients. I get a lot of requests for custom furniture from people who simply don’t want to get exactly what everyone else bought off the shelf at the big chain stores (and believe me, we have some seriously big chain stores around KC for furniture). I adore clean, sophisticated and edgy contemporary designs.В  If you read my blog on transforming furniture, you’ll know that I’m not afraid of exploring new ideas and you’d be amazed at how well these things can blend in with some of your existing pieces. I delight in discovery, and I wanted to show you some really unique furniture in this week’s post. So don’t fret my pet, I’m about to rescue you from the thought of never finding the furniture that is as unique as you are! If you happen to be around Kansas City and are on a quest for high quality, unique and custom furniture, we happen to have a lot in common. We simply must meet and perhaps you’ll let me help you end your search by assisting you with choosing the perfect piece.В  Afterall, there’s no one else quite like you so why should you settle for ordinary? You can find me and Design Connection on Facebook, Twitter, here on my AskArlene Interior Design blog or you can fill out my Contact Form or call the office (913) 851-8776.В  See how easy it is to track me down? Now let’s track down your furniture!

Thinking Green Design Flooring Series vol 2. Bamboo Floors

Categories: Design Inspiration, Floors, Green Design, Kitchens, Living Areas, Remodeling

Oooooh that’s Bamboo?  Shock and surprise are often a common response when we show samples and ideas for bamboo flooring to our clients. There are a variety of styles and finishes to choose from that make Bamboo a serious contender for hardwood flooring choices. Typically when we think of bamboo, visions of lush green forests and zen design styles come to mind, but did you know it’s one of the most renewable resources out there? Bamboo is an extremely fast growing plant which can reach maturity in as little as 3 years unlike traditional hardwood trees which can take decades to regenerate. >From kitchens to living areas, there are lots of great ideas out there and many great galleries to look at to become inspired.В  For instance, check out this Flooring Gallery from Bamboo Hardwoods for some great photos and ideas on how different bamboo floors can look.

Renewable resources are a hot topic in design these days which is why we are dedicating a series of articles to exploring options in green design.В  Our first installation is on flooring.В  One of the most dramatic ways to affect a room’s design is with flooring. In recent years flooring options have changed from the standards of wood, carpet and tile to include a variety of materials including cork. Now, most people think of cork as something they see on their bulletin board or perhaps with their favorite bottle of wine but the truth is that it’s a wonderful and versatile choice in flooring as well.

Clean and Chic, Cork Flooring is a Green Choice

Categories: Design Inspiration, Floors, Green Design, Kitchens, Remodeling

Did you see the article about cork flooring in the Sunday House and Home section of the Kansas City Star? My opinion on cork is that it is a wonderful green alternative material. But… it must be used in the right room with the right conditions. Cork is perfect for a fun playroom because it is soft and durable. However, if you have a traditional kitchen, the casual look of cork would probably not work. It works best with transitional or modern designs. I suggest consulting an interior designer before you make major home improvement decisions. You might be focusing on the qualities of the material, while we can see how it will impact the look of your home. www.designconnectioninc.com Cork_Tiles

Design Tip: Cork is a flexible material and can be cut into a variety of sizes. We can create interesting borders orВ patterns just like we would with tile or wood.
