1980’s Bathroom Gets Transitional Transformation: A Design Connection, Inc. Featured Project
The pictures of my latest Master Bathroom Remodel are up! This 1980’s carpeted master bathroom underwent a drastic transformation. See the Before & After pics and read the design story here!
This beautiful Leawood home was built in the 1980’s when golden oak was the popular choice for wood flooring and trim. Trendy for its time, this carpeted master bathroom was outfitted with oak cabinets, trim, and doors. The clients decided they were ready for a whole new look!
I previously designed and completed the entire downstairs of the home (keep reading for pics) and was so excited to begin the design on the master bathroom. The DC team constructed Auto-Cad drawings for the new cabinet designs and tile elevations for the shower, which helped my clients understand and envision the new design for their bathroom.
We were able to make better use of their space by removing the unused bathtub and installing a large makeup area.
Custom designed for the way they live and move throughout their space, each cabinet was well thought out and planned with the clients’ exact needs and ease-of-use in mind.
The original shower was small and outdated with basic builder-grade fixtures.
The shower was enlarged and a quartz-top bench installed. The trim-free Euro-style shower door allows for unimpeded views and optimal lighting, making the updated shower feel even bigger.
I assisted the clients with their material selections, including countertops, tiles, lighting, plumbing fixtures, colors, and cabinet design. I also met with the cabinet company and the contractors, ensuring precise designs and quality craftsmanship.
The 1980’s carpet and golden oak is gone! The painted cabinets and trim in a neutral palette help this master bathroom feel large and bright, elegant, and comfortable. My clients love their new space!

In 1989, this home was on the cutting edge of interior design. Although times certainly have changed in the past 30 years, this home’s décor had not. It was like a beautifully preserved time capsule from 1989, featuring a traditional brick fireplace, teal leather furniture and golden oak paneled walls.
After my initial consultation with the homeowners, it was determined that their personal style was more transitional than traditional 1989, so we quickly got to work. The focal point of the room, the fireplace, was dark, dated and dingy.
We opted to work around a total demolition of the old brick façade by installing horizontal 12×24 stone tiles over the existing brick. Our incredibly talented tile expert at Design Connection, Inc. placed both mosaic and linear tiles over the old surface and skillfully addressed the challenging curves along the hearth. Glass fire rocks were placed in the firebox in place of faux wood and beautiful vases were selected for a final touch to this updated fireplace.
My secret weapon, the best faux painter in Kansas City, was brought in to transform the wall paneling. The golden oak was given a soft, neutral glow, which instantly updated and brightened the space.
In addition to the neutral furniture, the tables, accessories and artwork was purchased through Design Connection, Inc., along with the mirror and metal accents. The homeowners love purple and the custom ottomans and fun pillows add a burst of color and a whimsical touch to this newly completed space.
Here’s what my clients had to say:
“Arlene magically transformed our living space into a beautiful and comfortable environment for relaxing and entertaining. She graciously accepted our ideas and incorporated them into an elegant design, changing our room from outdated to updated. Working with Arlene and her staff has been a delightful experience. We highly recommend Arlene Ladegaard and Design Connection, Inc. as the highest standard in interior design.”
