Steampunk is a genre of science fiction usually set in a quasi-Victorian alternate history setting that typically portrays steam-powered machinery and ornate mechanical workings as advanced technology. I’ve heard it described as, “What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner.” So, what do flying boats, spinning gears and copper pipes have to do with interior design? Read on to see how steampunk designs are taking home decor back to the future.

Love for this genre of science fiction has transformed from a niche subculture into design mainstream. Steampunk inspired designs are finding their way into our homes, from jewelry designers and fashions off the runway to furniture and accessories. Famous American furniture chains like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have even released their own collections of Jules Verne inspired furniture, accessories and lighting. Our love of old fashioned materials has been reignited: Victorian-inspired furnishings and rustic dark woods and leathers are the perfect backdrop for steampunk accessories and objects.

There are many different ways incorporate your love of the steampunk style without committing your home’s decor entirely to this theme.  Just like you might add a punch of color to a room with throw pillows and accessories, you can add a punch of steampunk style to your space with functional upcycled and remastered creations.

There are two rooms in your home that stand apart from the rest when it comes to bending the rules of interior design: the powder room and the basement. You can step off the beaten path of your home’s decor and even maybe go a little nuts with a theme in these spaces.
