Pantone’s Color of the Year 2015: Marsala
Before you react to Marsala, Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year, see it in action! We have selected some of our favorite ways to introduce this eye-catching earthy hue into your home décor.
Every December, Pantone, the global authority on color and the provider of professional color standards, announces their “Color of the Year” along with an explanation of the reasons the color will be representative of the upcoming year. This year, Pantone selected Marsala as the 2015 Color of the Year.
“This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors,” says Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®
One of the most popular colors planned for this year for weddings, Marsala has dominated the catwalks and taken the fashion industry by storm. But what does this mean for interior design trends? Like Radiant Orchid, last year’s Color of the Year, expect to see Marsala popping up in all areas of home décor.
Like many fashion trends, Marsala seems to make an appearance every other decade or so. Unlike the deep maroons made popular in the 70’s–and once again in the 90’s, this creamy blush is commanding yet calming. Marsala “has an organic and sophisticated air,” says Pantone’s Leatrice Eiseman. The color conveys “a vintage but neutral feel, which evokes pleasant memories.”
So, what is the best way to blend Marsala within your existing home decor? With accessories, of course! While Marsala can be a main dominating color, it’s amazing how effortless this gorgeous muted red blends with other colors when used as an accent.
With a few throw pillows that feature Marsala, adding hints of this color throughout your space will fall into place with simple accessories. The folks at Zazzle make it all too easy to customize this beautiful color into everything in their inventory, from pillows and blankets to serving trays, lamp shades and dishes. Marsala looks incredible on the walls as well! Marsala is a yummy choice for the kitchen or dining room decor, as red tones are believed to stimulate your appetite. Gray tones pair exceptionally well with this earthy red wine color and can bring the perfect amount of oomph to your backsplash. Marsala can add depth when paired with different textures, like the sophisticated glass and stone Merola tile pictured below.
I am a huge believer in the power of feature walls. A little bit of wallpaper can really go a long way! And with the wonders of modern wallpaper, you can change your feature wall often, easily and afford-ably. So, go for it! If you love this color, slap it on the walls. Literally. Pick your favorite Marsala wall decal and slap it on there!
