If your home were a hotel, how many stars would your guest room receive? All too often, guest bedrooms are the last room in the house to get any design attention. Whether your guest room is a dedicated space for your overnighting family and friends or if it doubles as your home office, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to ensure the comfort of your company.

The needs of your guests are generally quite simple; a nice place to sleep and somewhere to store their luggage and personal items. A comfortable bed and two nightstands, completed with a chest or even a bench is all the furniture this space really requires. A headboard can be used as a statement piece that will tie the whole room together.

Guest rooms are often the smallest room in the house. If space is an issue, consider hanging pendant lights or wall sconces in place of the traditional table lamps.  Not only will your guest room instantly be on the cutting edge of interior design, it will free up that much needed bedside space.

Another way to save on space is by getting creative with your bedside tables. Not only do they not need to match, they don’t even have to be tables! If you have a hard time envisioning a bedroom without side tables, check out more examples here.

Your guest room can attain a 5 star hotel rating if you create an environment that promotes a great night’s sleep. Make the bed super comfy by adding a thick duvet and lots of fluffy pillows. High thread-count, 100 percent cotton sheets are also a must. Can’t decide on the perfect bedding for your guest room? Pottery Barn makes it easy with their virtual design-your-own-bed. You can even chose the paint color to see what your new bed will really look like in your space!

Hang a mirror in the guest room to provide a place for spot checks and make-up touch-ups. A wall mirror is a must-have accessory for any properly outfitted guest room, especially if your guests will be using a shared bathroom.
