Top 5 Home Decor Accessories to Have in a Storm
Kansas City got smacked with an angry storm earlier this week, which left us interior designers at Design Connection, Inc. and thousands of our neighbors without power or *gasp* wireless internet.
It’s moments like these that make us realize the modern conveniences that we have grown accustomed to and the many comforts of home that we take for granted. Lights. A hot shower. A hot meal. Air conditioning. Internet access. A charged cell phone.
The interior Designers at Design Connection, Inc. came up with a list of our Top 5 must-have accessories that will help give you back some of those modern conveniences in the event of a power outage. What’s that, you say? Home decor that can beautify my home AND save my sanity? Do tell!
1. Staying Warm Through the Storm
Winter is just around the corner. Getting stuck in a storm with no heat is no fun. Cuddle up with someone you love under the fuzziest, warmest blanket we could find: Horchow’s Sweet Dreams Faux Fur Coverlet.

2. Light it Up
I Love candles. I LOVE candles. But my husband? Not so much. Every time I light a candle he worries aloud about how we could potentially burn down the house. (He’s so cute when he worries!) We found an easy compromise with these battery operated flickering pillar candles. My favorite part? They come with a remote control!

3. Low on Power-High on Style
Now that you’ve got your remote controlled flameless candles to set the mood on a stormy night, you’ll need beautiful candle holders to display them in. Our interior designers at Design Connection, Inc. put it to a vote and the winner of this week’s Designer’s Choice Award goes to the Sorel Double Wall Sconce from Uttermost.

4. Hot Food on a Cold Night
It’s no secret that we’re fans of induction cooktops; except in power outages. They’re electric. No electricity means no cooking. No morning coffee. No bacon and eggs. Not to fear, the Portable Kitchen Concept by Merwyn Wijaya will have you boiling water in less than 30 seconds-faster than you can place an order at your local drive-thru. This isn’t just your average portable induction cooktop. It’s a high-tech cooking system. The pan alone is amazing! It’s made of a 2-way ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. Basically, when it’s cool it lays completely flat; when it’s placed on the induction cooktop it takes the shape of a pan. Brilliant!
Living in Kansas City, we’re no stranger to strong storms, seasonal micro-bursts and occasional tornadoes. Sometimes riding out the storm in your designated safe place can take longer than your family may be comfortable with. Having a kitchen accessory that is functional, portable and space-saving like this slim lined cooking system can make a world of difference; especially if you find yourself without power for days.

5. Phone Home
One last must-have accessory for any home is a good old fashioned flashlight. This particular flashlight isn’t exactly old fashioned and it isn’t exactly candy in the eyes of an interior designer (I keep mine tucked away in a kitchen drawer), but, it could be a life saver. Having a smart phone is pointless in an emergency if the battery is dead! This unassuming flashlight runs on rechargeable batteries and is equipped with a built-in USB port capable of fully charging your cell phone and providing hours of light in the event of an emergency.
