What Makes a Great Room Great?

For the Design Connection, Inc. team, the answer is easy: Effortless style and everyday comfort!

In this blog, the Design Connection, Inc. team showcases our favorite transformations of great rooms – browse our collection of great style for a relaxed lifestyle!

Follow the Curves

The architectural lines and natural light of this room are beautiful!  Yet the space lacked a focal point, and the boxy seating arrangement detracted from its structural beauty.

Great Room Before

Open and Inviting: We coordinated the wall colors in a light-reflecting pale gray, and opened up the focus of the room to face the stunning fireplace and windows. The curved statement sofa blends with the architectural elements of the room. Leather and fabric chairs complete the seating options – perfect for entertaining!

Great Vibes

A great room without conversation spaces diminishes its functionality as as gathering place. Also, n a room this large, the mirrors created expanse where it wasn’t needed.

Great Room Before

What a great vibe for a great room!  We replaced the mirrors with wall art and added seating options. With its spacious high ceiling, this room called for a statement lighting. This fixture’s ribbon-like spirals and gold-tone finish give this family gathering space dramatic flair. We love the movement it brings to this room!

A Study in Blue

This room’s potential was overshadowed by a dark brick fireplace. Too many pieces of furniture lining the walls of the room gave the floor plan a choppy feel.

Great Room Before

A redefined space in signature shades of blue! We painted the fireplace in a creamy white and showcased the natural light with custom window blinds. The rug frames the room with a large-scale pattern of blue and cream. An over-sized leather ottoman in deep blue with nail head trim becomes a focal point without overwhelming the space.

From Visual Distraction to Visual Appeal

This room’s mix of colors and textures didn’t match the relaxed, chic style our clients wanted. The golden oak walls and brick  fireplace made the room look dated. The turquoise seating created an additional visual distraction.

Great Room Before

The new tile fireplace is the showpiece in this room! The tile and height of this fireplace give this space a look all its own. The tonal walls and sofa complement the hues in the fireplace tile. Gorgeous new chairs and jewel-toned ottoman in deep plum add a pop of visual interest to this comfortable, sophisticated seating.

Depth and Warmth

Before the renovation, this great room  looked cramped – large pieces of furniture made the space feel stuffy. Design Connection, Inc.’s design concept scaled down the furniture and added depth and warmth.

Great Room Before

Transformed! The stonework fireplace and walls make this great room great. We added drapery over the shutters to flank the fireplace. Smaller, lower-scale pieces gave the living room more depth and added seating for entertaining and relaxing. With two couches, two chairs, two coffee tables and two ottomans, this room still feels open!

Balancing Color and Texture

This room had gradually become both a casual living and storage space, and lacked character. Our client loved a vibrant shade of green, but the accent wall made the room feel disorganized and disjointed.

Great Room Before

Green –  in all the right places! We painted the walls in a sleek ermine greige and incorporated our client’s love of vibrant green in touches of citron. The upholstered bench adds color and texture, and does double-duty as both seating and a coffee table. The chair and pillows continue the citron and gray color palette in a playful, large-scale pattern.

From Mismatched to Majestic

This great room serves as a primary space to relax, watch television or gather for holidays. The walls had beautiful detailing that was overpowered by the heavy feel of the brick fireplace and oak bookcases.

Great Room Before

Majestic! Custom bookcases in a deep espresso finish immediately elevate this space and discreetly house the television. A pale gray hue on the fireplace creates harmony with the gray-toned color palette of the rug and sectional. This room is ready for anything – from a football game to a holiday party!
